Overview:

In this workshop, students will learn about the fermented indigo dyeing and two different indigo dye methods that have traditionally been practiced in East Asia including China, Japan, and Korea. Fresh indigo leaf dyeing is a cold dye with ice and you can get the special jade shades on fabric. It is a special seasonal dyeing method that is commonly practiced in Korea and other regions in East Asia. You’ll also pound freshly picked indigo leaves on fabrics directly. The naturally fermented indigo vat will be provided in the class to learn how to dye fabrics with the indigo vat and how to make resist print with soy paste.

Timeline

10:00 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. (50 minutes): a short tour of the outdoor dye garden and lecture/presentation about Indigo Shade Map, indigo dye process, and story about Asian indigo plant “Polygonum tinctorium”

10 minutes break

(1hour)

11:00 a.m - 12:30 p.m. (1 hour 30 minutes): Fresh indigo leaf dyeing & soy paste resist demo and studio time

12:30 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. (30 minutes): Lunch break

1:00 p.m. - 1:50 p.m. (50 minutes): Fabric dyeing with the fermented indigo vat and learning basic resist pattern makings

1:50 p.m. - 2:00 p.m (10 minutes): Q&A and wrap-up
