The Art of Indigo: A Hands-On Workshop in East Asian Textiles

from $125.00
Registration is closed

In this hands-on workshop, you will create a unique fabric book featuring various shades of indigo and intricate patterns. We will explore two traditional East Asian textile techniques: Stitched Shibori and Soy Flour Paste Resist. These methods, historically practiced in China and Japan, allow for expressive pattern-making on fabric. Unlike rice paste, soy flour paste is easier to prepare and apply, making it an excellent medium for detailed designs.

Each participant will receive fabric to experiment with these resist techniques—adding shibori patterns or drawing imagery with soy paste. By the end of the session, we will bind the dyed fabric pieces into a sewn book, creating a one-of-a-kind textile journal.

Date: Saturday, May 31st, 2025

Time: 10am -3 pm

Duration: 5 hours (30 minute lunch)

Artist: Rosa Sung Ji Chang

Cost: $125-165 Sliding Scale

Location: 209 McAllister Street, Studio A, Baltimore, MD 21202

About our sliding Scale

$125

3 spots

Consider paying this amount if you have limited expendable income, have little or no access to financial support from family, have significant debt, and little or no access to savings. This is a discounted rate.

$150

6 spots

Consider paying this amount if doing so would be an investment, but not create hardship for your household. You might choose this rate if you are able to regularly meet your basic needs and have some expendable income, can travel every couple years without burden, and have some debt but are able to pay it regularly. This is the true cost of a session.

$165

3 spots

Please consider paying this amount if you are comfortably able to meet your basic needs, own the home you live in, have paid or pay for private education, travel recreationally, have access to financial savings and/or investments, have reliable work or do not have to work to meet your needs, have inherited wealth, and/or have increased earning privilege due to your race, gender, or education. This rate sustains me in working with folx who need a lower rate.

Thanks to Orion Johnstone and Worts & Cunning + Sun English for the language for supporting & articulating sliding scale.

“Some Kind of Blue” at Studio Blue (concept store upstairs) will also be open for browsing and shopping.

Please Note:

•There are 20 stairs to climb to Studio Blue. We apologize for whatever inconvenience this may cause.
